The following are scams that were reported to Better Business Bureau serving the Northwest & Pacific in January. In most instances names and locations have been omitted to protect the victims’ privacy.

In January, there were 16 scams reported to BBB Scam Tracker with an estimated $360,000 lost in Alaska.

Puppy Scam

A Kenai Peninsula Borough woman reports she lost $800 to a puppy scam. After finding a Teacup Yorkie through online classifieds, she paid a deposit of $800 via money order. She reported the seller kept making excuses as to why she hadn’t shipped the dog. She realized it was a scam when she never received the dog and the seller stopped communicating with the woman.

Online Purchase Scam

An Anchorage man reports he lost $200,000 to an online purchase scam. He reported signing a contract and paying $200,000 to purchase raw cashew nuts. After the payment was sent, the seller moved his company to a different address and stopped all communication with the man.

Sweepstakes/Lottery/Prizes Scam

An Anchorage man reports he was the target of a Reader’s Digest Contest scam. The man claims he received multiple calls from someone working for Reader’s Digest stating he won $985,000 and a new car. He knew it was a scam when the caller asked him to get a claim receipt from the post office and send two checks for a total of $789 to claim the prize.
