The following are scams that were reported to Better Business Bureau serving the Northwest & Pacific in January. In most instances names and locations have been omitted to protect the victims’ privacy.
In January, there were 10 scams reported to BBB Scam Tracker with an estimated $1,000 lost in Montana.
Secret Shopper Scam
A Great Falls woman reports she was the target of a secret shopper scam. She reports she was asked to participate in a Wal-Mart Secret Shopper via Survey Monkey. A person from “Community Research Inc.” mailed her a check for over $1,500. She was instructed to wire $1,200 via Western Union to a man in Georgia and keep $300 for herself. She found out it was a scam when she looked it up online.
A Flathead County woman reports she was a target of a phishing scam. She reports receiving multiple phone calls from a person asking her to buy an extended warranty on her truck.
A Billings man reports he was the target of an employment scam. He reports “Global Logistics and Warehousing” hired him as a project manager. The company instructed him to take exams to see if he qualified for training. He became suspicious of the company when they asked him to do a “special project” and asked for his credit card information.
